It's been awhile since I have posted anything. This is the time of year when many things change to a different pace.
God has created us to both work and rest. Somehow, one of these has overshadowed the other in our society. That's too bad because it has a negative effect on our spirituality.
Have you ever heard someone say, " I don't have time to pray." or " My work is my prayer.?"These and similar attitudes fail to recognize the need God has instilled in our very being for quiet and rest; re-creation. Without rest and quiet, we are too busy or too occupied to listen to God spek to us. We make a decent effort to speak TO God but how often is it a monologue with us doing all the talking.
Rest & quiet have great value and are an essential part of any mature relationship with God.
So I hope you find a time & place for quiet this Summer and throughout the year.
Gerard - just wanted to share how beautiful the mass of welcome was on Sunday for the candidates and catechumenates. Your attention to detail and love of Christ was contagious! Thank you for being you!!! Can't wait to move forward with my candidate! God Bless - Susan Morrisette
ReplyDeleteJesus "In the morning long before dawn, he got up and left the house, and went off to a lonely place and prayed there." (Mk 1:32-39) With how busy Jesus was he still found time to rest and meditate through prayer. That's just a quote I thought related well to this but I agree.people should spent more time in a resting state that doesn't involve any form of entertainment(like television) but more of a meditation. I am pretty positive that every one hear in the united states spends more that an hour watching television or enjoying some other stupid invention that we created to help pass the dull moments. the moments that should be spent prayer. But it is a lot easier said then done to turn off the technology get on your knees and pray because there are so many different forms of the temptations of slothfulness nowadays; phones, computers, video games etc. Also on the topic of rest. We are supposed to rest of Sunday because it is a commandment to keep the day Sabbath and not make anyone work for us as well. So I just got to put it out there that nothing makes me madder than seeing a catholic family go to dinner at some sort of restaurant right after Sunday mass because they know that Sunday is the day of rest yet they are forcing other people to work for them unnecessarily. Although they have to work anyway. still don't contribute to that. I miss the days when all the stores were closed on Sundays. I wish it was still like that. But nowadays its all about the money so stores are constantly open and never stop for rest. that's kind of off topic yet still somewhat relates. Moral of the story though : don't be lazy, find time to be lazy. I would add "especially on Sunday".
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that Sunday is a day of rest, I would not be too quick to judge those who go out to eat after Mass.
ReplyDeleteWe cannot control how others observe Sunday. For some, it isn't their Sabbath. For others, it is more important to be able to work and feed their families than to shut down on Sunday. I know it isn't ideal. If you do go out on Sunday, make an effort to bring joy to those you meet, especially if they have to give up their day of rest in order to keep a roof over their heads.
